Artist Statement:
In my clay practice, I am interested in functional pieces with subtle decoration. I often use textures added either by imprints in the clay or by added clay decorations and sprigs on the surface. I generally glaze with the same subtleties-using second colors to accent small parts of the whole. I am also drawn to historical ceramic objects that display a sense of humor or devotion of the maker-a face or animal worked into the pot-providing some insight without abandoning function.
Artist Bio:
I was late to the art of making objects in clay, not beginning work with ceramics until was an older adult. But, though not actively making my own artwork earlier, I have always been intrigued by the process and the outcomes of others, especially historical pots. My initial foray in making ceramics was as student at the Westchester Art Workshop primarily under the tutelage of Harriet Ross. I was a convert as soon as I had my hands centering the clay on the wheel. Eventually I migrated to the Clay Art Center continuing classes with Harriet Ross and also with other artists there, including Lindsay Scypta, Jeanne Carreau, and guest potters Don Reynolds and Cory Brown among those. In addition I have taken workshops with: Todd Wahlstrom, Nick Joerling, Malcolm Davis, Matthew Hyleck, Mary Barringer, Sam Taylor, Randy Johnston, Jan MacKeachie, Michael McCarthy, Phil Rogers, Alison Palmer and Logan Wall. Eventually I applied for and became an associate artist at CAC with ongoing learning from my interactions with the many other artists at the Clay Art Center.
