Artist Statement:

My body of work is related to my understanding of how I navigate the world, holding myself to the close connections I make with my family and friends, while also defining my experience of living within the Black and African diaspora and as a Queer Woman. I deliberate the idea of intersectionality and finding peace in others like me- those who look like me and have had similar life experiences. In my pieces, portraiture is my most prominent form of communication as well as my main focus. Growing up, I was always surrounded by media that easily showed eurocentric features, heteronormative relationships, smooth, unblemished, unrealistic skin and bodies. In spite of this, I have always had loving friends, family, and partners.

My piece, Lovers Lost at Sea, illustrates that all encompassing generosity of having someone with you at your lowest moment- someone who looks like you, knows you, and understands you. While making this piece, I was conflicted on the placement of the two faces but I ultimately decided on placing them within the basket like vessel. They are unmistakably Black. I glazed them with just black iron oxide to catch all the texture in their hair and face in contrast to the flowy translucent glazes that surround them. The basket, constructed with flat, thin, and fragile coils can carry them to safety amongst dangerous and shaky waters. The faces are almost hidden as to give them some privacy from others that may be peeking in to their tumultuous journey. Even if someone can peek in, it will not bother them because they are only focused on the wellbeing of one another.
