Artist Statement:
My journey as a sculptural clay artist developed as I traveled the world and had the opportunity to see and meet people from all walks of life going about their daily tasks and lives. As I observed them, I developed an appreciation for the beauty and uniqueness of how much we communicate just by our body positions and gestures. In doing so, I learned to view the body not just as an image but as a way to communicate. My sculptures try to capture what is the same about each of us as we go about doing ordinary tasks and get the viewer to share in the story being communicated through subtle differences in body position, eyes, dimples, head shape, hair and hand gestures. Each sculpture has "the face of every person I have ever seen, although I don't always remember their names.”
Artist Bio:
My art career as a sculptor began later in life after a 23-year career as an international lawyer and corporate executive. As I got older, I became aware of how art can be one of many tools that can be used to combat Alzheimer's. Sculpting became a medium for my personal battle against this disease which has occurred with some frequency in my family. Sculpting not only allows me to use different parts of my brain but it also unleashes the creativity of my hands. Sculpting is, therefore, my journey of both preservation and determination and it has changed my life's trajectory. My work has been shown at: Harlem Fine Art Shows (NYC and DC), Clay Art Center Gallery (NY),Carter Burden Gallery (NYC), Just Lookin’ Gallery (MD), Franklin Gallery (NC)and Montclair Art Museum thru Empower the people (NJ).
