Happy Pride Month from Clay Art Center!

Happy Pride Month from Clay Art Center! We are proud to foster a supportive community here where people of all identities are welcome.

This month, we are celebrating Pride in a variety of ways, such as through our online Pride Month Exhibition, Thicc-ening the Narrative, guest curated by Deshun Peoples. In the words of Deshun, “I want this exhibition to not just celebrate fat, queer, BIPOC bodies, but also to reinvigorate a conversation on body size, politics of desirability, and fat justice as well as more fully imagine fatness as a social identity subject to structural oppression (particularly in medical, cosmetic/beauty, and dieting/fitness industries).” Clay Art Center is proud to be presenting an exhibition which explores a topic that is necessary for moving towards equity within the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond.

Concurrent with the exhibition is a Virtual Artist Panel Discussion that we will be hosting on Thursday, June 20, at 7 PM EST. This online Panel Discussion, held through Zoom, will be exploring the topic of the exhibition more deeply through discussing the artist’s intersectional identities, lived experiences and how these inform their ceramic work. It will be moderated by Guest Curator, Deshun Peoples. The attending artists are Carletta Williams, Shaun Mallonga, V Walton, and Gerald Brown.

Clay Art Center is also getting involved with the local LGBTQIA+ community by hosting a clay table at Port Chester Pride Day Event at Liberty Square on June 22nd, from 9 - 11 AM EST. There will be a Pride flag raising, arts and crafts, other fun activities, and is open to the whole Port Chester community!

It is an important goal of Clay Art Center to support emerging and established LGBTQIA+ ceramic artists and we are centering that goal this month by featuring the work of various artists of the LGBTQIA+ community, such as Kyle Lee, Mac McCusker, Kenya Moffett-Garner and others. Their work tells important stories and provides valuable perspectives that we wish to highlight this month.

Clay Art Center is delighted to celebrate Pride Month in meaningful ways this month that propel meaningful conversations. We hope you can engage with us through our Pride Month Programming!
