Celebrating Legacies and Community Through Clay
Highlights from our Concurrent Artists in Residence Opening Reception, The Noguchi Museum, and Pride Day in Port Chester.
Congratulations to Artists in Residence Schuyler Forsythe, Evelyn Mtika, and Jess Levin on the opening of their Concurrent Exhibitions at Clay Art Center!
Our Artist in Residence program was founded just over 25 years ago by Director Emeritus Reena Kashyap, with over 50 artists having completed a residency with us to date. We are proud to add three more incredible emerging artists to that list, and can’t wait to see what they do next!
The exhibitions are available to view in our gallery now through August 3rd, and invite us into critical dialogues through clay on topics such as identity, relationships, environment, and personal historical narratives. Thank you to everyone who came out for our Opening Reception including Clay Art Center Board President Sally Ng, and fellow Board members. Learn more about the exhibitions.
Clay Art Center joined the local community in a celebration of Pride Month with Port Chester Pride Day! We were delighted to participate in this event in our local community alongside several other organizations and representatives of local, county, and state government. We were honored to help raise awareness for our LGBTQIA+ community and engage with people through free clay activities!
For more Pride Month programming from Clay Art Center, visit our online exhibition Thicc-ening The Narrative, guest curated by Deshun Peoples.
Last week, members of our clay community took a guided tour of The Isamu Noguchi Foundation & Garden Museum to see the Toshiko Takaezu: Worlds Within exhibition on view now through July 28th.
Our Clay Art Center community enjoyed seeing the work and learning more about the incredible contributions Takaezu made as an artist to the ceramics field. A contemporary of Clay Art Center co-founders Katherine Choy and Henry Okamoto, and early Clay Art Center artist Jeff Schlanger, Takaezu is remembered by Jeff who states, “Toshiko’s message is Peace, her medium is hushed Silence with Bells on.”
Toshiko Takaezu: Worlds Within continues at The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum until July 28, 2024.
