Letter to our Community: Connections Digital Exhibit Extended
July 6, 2020
As an artist, I have always turned to creativity in times of stress to remain centered. As the Exhibitions Manager of Clay Art Center, I was acutely aware of the impact of COVID-19 on our immediate artist members, students and staff, but also in the other communities our mission supports – our community arts partners, our artist in residence program, and the people who love to come to our opening nights and celebrate the new exhibitions in our gallery. People were feeling disconnected, adrift and isolated. With CONNECTIONS, I was able to put Clay Art Center in a position to provide an outlet for us all to move forward as one, to share each other’s burden, and to allow a dialogue to begin that is unlimited by physical space or location.
We have had to pivot greatly as an organization that deals with visual and kinesthetic practices into the online environment. Yet, in the middle of the crisis, there is hope, a coming together of people, and silver linings. In CONNECTIONS, we are fostering creativity, growth, interaction and understanding as a society, and as part of something much larger than ourselves. We are united by the common denominator of the pandemic, and with CONNECTIONS, Clay Art Center has risen to the need of ceramic artists, students, and the community at large to provide a place to heal, share and love. I am happy to be a part of something positive and community-based.
