Meet our new Community Arts Interns!
Our Community Arts team has been busy this Fall running an after school program - Around the World in Clay - for Port Chester elementary, middle school and high school students at our studios. To help us facilitate these programs we have two wonderful interns, Emily Basurto and Alejandra Cambillo, who work closely with our Westchester Community Fellow, Breana Hendricks, and help around the studio. They’re learning how to maintain and work in a studio and are building up their resumes for a bright future.
Meet our interns
Emily Basurto
“My name is Emily Basurto, and I am a senior at the Port Chester High School. I enjoy creating art in my spare time. I got involved with the Clay Arts Center back in my freshman year, when I joined one of their teen classes. It was honestly the best decision I ever made. I have a lot of fond memories of making pieces I’m really proud of and spending time with my friends. The Clay Arts Center has always been a space where I don’t have to worry about school and could just make fantastic pieces of art with some really cool people. This internship really means a lot to me because it will give me the chance to learn more about ceramics, and maybe even improve my skills. I was really excited when I was offered this internship. I just know it will be a wonderful experience for me. I hope to continue on with ceramics and art in the future, as I really want to attend an art school after I graduate. I look forward to this internship! I want to thank CAC for offering me this opportunity.“
Alejandra Cambillo
“When I think of an internship, I think of endless possibilities. I have been grateful to the Clay Arts Center since the start of my freshman year. The memory of realizing that ceramics is something I see myself doing in the future fascinates me.
To say I am thankful for this internship is an understatement. Being the person that I am, I have always aimed to do more and be a little bit extra. This internship has opened many doors for me, especially when it comes to considering a college. I’ve been here since my freshman year and not being able to work with clay like I used to before upsets me. I have seen myself improve in many different ways, whether it be with clay in general or if it is my social skills. I am able to do what I love with people that I feel comfortable with. I will continue to cherish this experience as long as I am able to. ”
Our Around the World in Clay classes have allowed us to work with, develop and inspire future ceramists and artists. Our classes had to be reduced in size but we continue to reach students in our community at a safe capacity. We are grateful for the opportunity to offer classes and positions like this internship. With the help of the Community Arts Team and Westchester Community Fellow, we hope to create future leaders and creators in our community. We will continue to work towards creating engaging programs for students and thank you for supporting the Clay Art Center.
Thank you to Common Sense Fund for the generous support of the Around the World with Clay program.
