Description

Learn the basics of Raku low fired glazes, application, and firing techniques in this one-day workshop. Students will pull their own pieces out from the hot kiln and carefully place them in a lidded container filled with combustible materials.

  • Bisqueware: You should plan on firing up to 3 - 5 pieces. Bring your own bisqueware or purchase from pre-made pieces at Clay Art Center.

  • Clay and Sizing: Pots should be made using raku clay or stoneware (181 or 306) with grog that you can buy at Clay Art Center, to better survive the firing process. No wider than 6" and no taller than 12"; avoid flat forms. Keep in mind that these pieces will need to be lifted with tongs so heavy pieces might not make it into a firing due to weight.

  • Glazing: Pieces will be glazed on-site during the class. Test tiles are available to show what glazes could look like.

  • Firing: Due to the nature of the firing process, student’s work will not be water tight (not functional or food-safe). Note that we will try to fire everyone's pieces, but some pieces may not be fired because of size or time constraints.

  • Food: Bring your own lunch or snacks. Students are welcome to use our mini fridge and water cooler in the Main Classroom.

  • Attire: Wear cotton clothing. Synthetic or wool clothing can get damaged with heat around the kiln and the reduction chambers. Long hair and loose clothing must be tied back.

We require a 21 day notification of cancellation for raku glaze firing. There are no refunds for cancellations made within 21 days of the class date. It is extremely difficult to find a replacement student if there is not enough time to make and bisque pieces before the class.

Skill: All Levels
Prerequisite: A Clay Art Center beginner clay course or equivalent ceramic skills.
