Shanna Fliegel | Working the Surface

VIRTUAL ARTIST DEMO

"Working the Surface" is a live Artist Demo* where Shanna creates layers of color, imagery and texture onto a clay surface.

Shanna demonstrates how to create a thermofax screen from start to finish with both an original drawing and copyright free image. Underglaze applications, sgraffito etching, and layering slips all contribute to a rich, narrative surface. Shanna talks about developing a lexicon of images to narrate an impression of a story, how text may add depth and finally, the importance of symbolism and play in the overall composition.

*Please note that due to technical issues only one of the two camera angles for this demo was recorded. Only footage from the side camera, and not the overhead camera, can be viewed.

**Shanna's technical demo sheet and instructions are available, please email mail@clayartcenter.org.

This webinar was originally aired November 16th, 2020, 7 - 8 PM Eastern Time via Zoom.
