Artist Bio
Observing the world in its grandeur and minuteness on a second to second basis has kept me amused and intrigued from my childhood. In my time on this planet, I have found the following to be true: straight lines do not exist in nature; everything – manmade and natural – has its own spirit; there is a world of inspiration to be found in every face; and last, but not least, humans are funny.
Artist Statement
Color has always been a big part of my life. I was gifted with the ability to mix colors intuitively and thought (as a child) that everyone could do this. I understood hue, chroma, and value at a very young age and how to achieve them without being taught.I found out as a young adult that I am a genetic tetrachromat (which is the ability to see more colors because of an extra rod in the eye structure). When I was a fledgling Dental Ceramist, I was tested for this ability using the Pantone Color Vision Test. I have only run into this gift in two other people in my lifetime so far; a friend of mine who is a pastel painter, and my very own granddaughter. Color lifts my spirit and gets me SO excited!! I love sharing my love for color in my paintings and clay sculptures. The idea of bringing the colors and combinations of my pastel paintings into my clay work has been very exciting. Using Amaco Velvet Underglazes and mixing them together to explore combinations has kept me very busy. Firing midrange has enabled me to get the hue, chroma and value I am looking for. I have been experimenting with layering colors using more or less water to give a translucent effect. I also really love the soft matt finish that the Velvets achieve at cone 6. Every day I learn something new about the application of color in my work, and I feel I have just scratched the surface of possibility. The use of color in my sculptures has given them warmth, life, dimension and excitement.
When people ask me where my ideas come from, I tell them that I really don't know. The response is usually, "I'd Love To Be a Fly Inside Your Brain."
