Artist Statement
I explore issues of marginalization translated into hand-built pottery and ceramic sculpture. Central concepts include maternal feminism informed by my lived experience as a woman, artist, and mother, narratives about North Texas flora and fauna, and mythology. Humble red earthenware is an ideal foundation with corporeal formal references to hip, shoulder, belly, and breast. Scale of the functional work teeters between table-top and hand-held since it is of paramount importance that my pots invite touch and use. The sculptural and installation work varies from tabletop to human scale, alternating between using the vessel as a conceptual vehicle and incorporating function into the sculpture. I create work that sings, in a cacophony or a chorus, about the injustice of oppression and acts as a clarion call for hope and reconciliation.
