Celebrate the Seasons Mosaic at JFK Magnet School in Port Chester
CLAY ART CENTER and JFK MAGNET SCHOOL Give Students the Chance to Learn, Grow and Create In partnership with the John F. Kennedy Magnet School Clay Art Center teaching artists work with 120 fifth graders to create a unique ceramic mosaic. The program funded by the Junior League of Westchester, New York State Council on the Arts and The Harry Chapin Foundation is part of an ongoing effort to bring the classroom out to the garden.
CAC’s professional teaching artists work with classroom teachers to introduce the elements of a successful garden from flowering trees, animals, creepy crawlers and more. Students create clay tiles that are taken back to Clay Art Center to be fired. The mosaic will come alive in spring of 2015 when it is permanently installed on walls in the school’s courtyard. This project began in 2011 in the OASIS After School program and has evolved over the years to decorate 70% of the courtyard’s wall and the greenhouse.
