ARTIST STATEMENT

Adventure and Curiosity: My creations in clay represent the world around me – I am constantly exploring new ways of expressing myself in clay. I am a learner and an adventurer and that is reflected in my creations. I approach my clay practice with the spirit of inquiry and exploration. I draw inspiration from nature and people. Each creation tells my story and has a range of emotions in it. The narrative is drawn out using a range of techniques that include textures, designs, motifs, shapes, and colors. I create pieces which give me joy and have meaning. From conceptualization to creation, each artwork in clay undergoes an adventurous journey with me. What goes into the fire is adream. What emerges is a story. I work with clay of various kinds, shaping it into decorative pieces, vases and sometimes into functional pots. I use stoneware and porcelain, light and dark clay. I work both on the wheel and build by hand, using slabs and coils and sculptural techniques. My forms are usually symmetrical while the decorations deliberately asymmetrical. I have discovered a passion for alternate firing, particularly the technique of raku. For me, raku embodies adventure.
