Hatsumi Suyama

ARTIST STATEMENT

Born and raised in Japan, my cultural background is deeply rooted in Japanese tradition. Even through I came to the United States when I was in my early 20’s and graduated from a university in this country, my interests have always been directed toward traditional Japanese design.

As a potter, I first started to learn western style pottery. However, I shifted my design theme gradually to create dishes inspired by Japanese design, using traditional techniques such as Sometsuke (blue underglaze on white porcelain), Haritsuke (coil attaching), Mishima (stamp inlay), and Nezumishino (shino glaze over iron slip). Currently, my main interest is to create tableware, which makes food more alluring and pleasing to the eye. Porcelain is the material I mainly use with the Sometsuke technique.
